Just a few notes off the top of my head:
Motivation is a depravation state - we are motivated because we need something
Maslow was not a business person - he was a developmental psychologist - studied the life cycle from birth to death - was not interested in the 35-year-old executive
Maslow described self-actualization as "feeling tingly all over"
You do not have to fill one level of the hierarchy in order to move on to the next level
A need once satisfied is no longer a need (something managers seem to be totally unaware of)
The first four levels of the hierarchy can in fact be satiated (filled to capacity) - self-actualization is "infinite"
According to Maslow one person in two thousand is self-actualized
McGregor was not a business person - he was a social psychologist - studied groups and social behavior - he became interested in the social psychology of organizations
Theory Z has absolutely nothing to do with Theories X and Y
Theory X is not necessarily a bad thing
Herzberg was an industrial psychologist - hurray!
His research methods have come under severe scrutiny by the academic community
Herzberg says money is NOT a motivator
His two factor theory is definitely worth thinking about
