HAVE YOU CHECKED THE MESSAGE BOARD LATELY???

Assignments

It is essential that you keep a copy of all of your assignments (e-mails). Once an assignment is graded and entered in GradeSource it is deleted from my computer. If there is a question about any grade you will need to re-submit your work.

We will cover units A-H in the Evans text.  Make sure you follow all instructions for downloading the data files you will need to complete the tutorials and exercises in the text.

Most assignments will be due on a Wednesday. For each unit you will have to do several things such as read the text, read a Cicero lecture where available, complete one or more exercises, and complete a 25-question exam. By the end of the last week you will also have to submit a three-page web that meets specific criteria.  Your web will actually be published to a web server at http://www.mysticmanagement.com.

WEEK 1 - June 9

Unit A - Getting Started with FrontPage 2003

  • Read pp. A1-A19
  • Independent Challenge 2 - p. A-23 - e-mail answers to section "a" , however, answer the questions about the web you are planning to design, not the example in the text; e-mail the answers to section "a" only by Wednesday 6/18

To answer the questions in section a you will have to decide what your web is going to be about. It can be a business idea, a family web site, a site about something you are interested in or anything else you choose. Key item: webs cannot contain any pornographic or suggestive materials, any racist materials, any foul language, or anything else that may be deemed inappropriate. Not sure? Check with me first. A violation here earns you a F in the course.

  • Submit answers to exam: "Getting Started with FrontPage 2003" by Wednesday 6/18

Link to test: Getting Started with FrontPage 2003
Be sure to put your name on the exam before submitting and make sure you send it to cis81@ciceros-pillar.com

This is what I was talking about in the survival guide. You must get the e-mail address exactly right or I will not receive the exam. And remember, all homework, including exams, goes to cis81@ciceros-pillar.com. Need a quick answer to a question - mail to expressmail@ciceros-pillar.com. And for heaven's sake, remember my name is CICERO not CICEROS.

Please note that Week 1 is continued in the next section. So you're not finished yet!

WEEK 1 - Continued

Unit B - Creating a Web Site

  • Read pp. B1-B17
  • Read "Creating An Empty Web on a Storage Medium" -  Link to: Cicero Lecture Series
  • E-mail me for your very own web site (to use during this class only).

Now this gets a bit tricky.  You send me an e-mail requesting your web site (yep, you get 10 points for the effort).  You will receive a web address for you to use during this class (and it's live on the web).  Your address will look like this: http://www.mysticmanagement.com/student1, student2, student 3, etc.  To get to your site on the web simply type in the URL (i.e. http://www.mysticmanagement.com/student1).

To get to your site in FrontPage so you can work directly on it do the following:

FILE
OPEN SITE
Site name: http://www.mysticmangement.com/student(your assigned number)
User name: student(your assigned number) - all lower case, no spaces
Password: s(your assigned number) - all lower case, no spaces

So, if you were assigned web number 24 you would use http://www.mysticmanagement.com/student24; your user name would be student24; and your password would be s24.

Make sure you do not for any reason go to another student's site - you will be hanged, probably upside-down.  That said, your site should have two folders (private and images) and one file (index.htm).  The index.htm file is your home page AND DO NOT CHANGE THE NAME OF THE FILE.  If you change the index.htm file name your home page will not display in the browser. Trust me on this. If your site has anything on it other than two folders and a blank home page (index.htm) let me know and I will either fix it or assign you a new, clean site.  Ready to drop the course yet? :)

  • Submit answers to exam: "Creating A Web Site" by Wednesday 6/18

So, to recap. By Wednesday, June 18 your should have done the following: (1) e-mailed the answers to Independent Challenge 2, only about your web site; (2) completed the tests for Units A and B; and (3) e-mailed me for your web location.  Highly recommended that you go to your web and "play around."  Working on a web page file is very similar to working with a blank Word document.

WEEK 2 - Continued
  • Read "Publishing a Web Site," pp. H2 - H3
  • Read "Publishing A Home Page to a Web Server" - Link to: Cicero Lecture Series
  • Publish a first draft of your home page to the web by Wednesday 6/25
  • Create a new page on your published web entitled "objectives" and place your objectives (that assignment you did in week 1 relating to independent challenge 2) on that page by Wednesday 6/25. Put a link on your home page to the objectives page.  More detailed instructions on Lecture Series.
  • Read "Creating an Empty Web on a Storage Medium" -  Link to: Cicero Lecture Series

Consider this: you need to have a draft of your home page and your objectives page linked to the home page by 6/27. Remember to name your pages (different from file names). Go to: FILE | PROPERTIES | GENERAL | TITLE.  The objectives page is in addition to the three pages required for the final project.  Final project includes: (1) Home Page; (2) two linked pages; and (3) linked objectives page.
